Chapter 9 - Midnight at the BoathouseThe old Vance family boathouse stood like a rotting skeletal structure against the dark, churning waters of the Connecticut lake. Thick fog rolled across the wooden docks, wrapping the decaying building in an eerie, ghostly shroud.

It was 11:55 PM.
Daniel stepped out of the shadows of the tree line, walking alone down the rotting wooden boardwalk toward the boathouse entrance, exactly as the ransom note had demanded. His coat collar was turned up against the chill, his hand resting firmly on the weapon hidden inside his pocket.
The heavy double doors of the boathouse creaked open as he approached. Inside, a single halogen work light cast a harsh, blinding glare over the damp concrete floor.

Tied securely to an old wooden chair in the center of the room was six-year-old Lily, her eyes wide with fright, a strip of tape over her mouth. Standing behind her, holding a heavy hunting knife with a manic, unstable grin, was Richard Vance—older, gaunt, and desperate.
“Ah, the brilliant billionaire arrives right on time,” Richard mocked, stepping forward, the knife gleaming dangerously close to Lily’s throat. “You really thought you could dig up my family’s skeletons and walk away, didn't you, Daniel?”
