Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath the HallwayThe heavy iron ring felt freezing cold against Daniel’s fingertips.

For a terrifying second, time seemed to grind to a absolute halt. The crystal chandelier above them cast a brilliant, mocking glare across the polished white marble, contrasting sharply with the grim, hidden reality waiting just inches beneath their feet.
“Daddy... open it,” Lily whispered, her small hand clutching the edge of Daniel’s sleeve.
With a deep breath that rattled in his chest, Daniel pulled upward.
A sharp, screeching groan of rusted hinges echoed through the empty hallway as the heavy wooden panel gave way, lifting upward with surprising resistance. A gust of thick, stagnant air rushed up from the dark void below—an ancient, suffocating smell of damp earth, old dust, and the unmistakable, metallic scent of human tears and fear.
Daniel coughed, waving his hand to clear the plume of disturbed dust. Then, he grabbed his phone from his pocket, flicked on the flashlight beam, and aimed it straight down into the opening.
The beam sliced through the absolute darkness, illuminating a steep, narrow set of stone steps leading down into a pitch-black subterranean chamber no larger than a walk-in closet.
And there, huddled in the far corner of the damp concrete floor, was a human figure.
“Oh, my God,” Daniel breathed, his voice dropping to a horrified whisper.
The beam of light caught the pale, gaunt face of a young woman wrapped in tattered rags, her eyes squeezed tightly shut against the sudden glare, her arms raised instinctively to shield her face. Her lips were cracked and dry, her skin deathly pale from years of absolute darkness.
“Please... please don't hurt me,” a weak, raspy voice whimpered from the bottom of the pit. “I didn't mean to... please...”
Lily gasped, peeking around her father’s arm. “Daddy, it’s the lady! She’s real!”

Daniel’s mind spun into a chaotic frenzy of shock and fury. Who was she? How long had she been trapped beneath his floorboards? And more importantly—who had put her there?
Before he could process the horrific implications, Daniel slid his feet into the opening, gripped the stone edges of the shaft, and descended into the abyss to rescue the ghost beneath his house.
