Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the FoundationTwo weeks passed before Daniel and Lily returned to normal routines at the Connecticut estate.

The mansion, however, was no longer the cold, sterile monument of limestone and wealth it used to be. Following the rescue, Daniel ordered a complete, irreversible architectural overhaul.

Contractors arrived early Monday morning with heavy machinery and diamond-tipped concrete saws. The hidden Prohibition-era vault beneath the grand hallway—the dark, suffocating cell where Clara had endured five years of isolation—was permanently filled in, sealed with reinforced steel and concrete, and leveled over.

Lily stood by the living room doorway, watching the workers hammer away at the old wooden flooring.

“Is it gone forever, Daddy?” Lily asked, clutching her building blocks.

Daniel walked over, kneeling beside her and placing a hand on her shoulder. “Completely gone, sweetheart. We’re tearing out the shadows and letting the light in. This house is going to be safe now. No secrets. No hiding places.”

Later that afternoon, Daniel sat in his executive study reviewing legal documents related to the estate’s title transfer. With Richard Vance’s assets seized by the federal government under racketeering and kidnapping charges, the courts had officially awarded full, unencumbered ownership of the surrounding acreage and the mansion to Clara Vance, with Daniel acting as trustee until she fully recovered.

Clara, meanwhile, had been discharged from the hospital and was currently resting in the estate’s sunlit guest suite, slowly learning how to walk beneath open skies, breathe fresh air, and eat home-cooked meals prepared by Mrs. Gable—who had tearfully begged for forgiveness and spent every waking hour trying to make amends for her past silence.

The house was healing. But Daniel knew that true healing required more than just sealing up old floors; it required rebuilding a family that had been broken for far too long.
