Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormThe following morning, the sun rose over the Connecticut estate, but no amount of daylight could thaw the ice settling in Daniel’s chest.

He sat at his executive desk in his study, the threatening text message glowing on his phone screen like a digital brand of death. He had already handed the phone over to the police cyber-crime unit, but he knew time was running out.
If someone inside his inner circle—a security chief, a longtime estate manager, or a trusted advisor—was tied to Clara’s imprisonment, then Lily was in immediate, grave danger.
A soft knock echoed at the study door.
Daniel looked up sharply, his hand instinctively resting near the drawer where he kept a licensed firearm. “Come in.”
The door pushed open, and Mrs. Gable, the elderly head housekeeper who had served the estate for over fifteen years, stepped inside, carrying a fresh cup of coffee on a silver tray. Her face was pale, her hands trembling slightly as she set the tray down on the desk.
“Mr. Harrington,” Mrs. Gable said softly, her voice uncharacteristically strained. “I... I heard about what happened at the hospital. About the poor girl found beneath the hallway.”
Daniel watched her carefully, his grey eyes narrowing with cold suspicion. “Did you, Mrs. Gable? You worked here when the previous owners managed the estate, didn't you?”
Mrs. Gable lowered her gaze, her fingers clutching the edge of her apron. “I did, sir. For many years.”

“Then tell me,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register as he stood up from his desk. “How is it possible that a human being was locked in a hidden cell beneath my feet for five years, and the woman who cleans this house every single day claims she never heard a single sound?”
Mrs. Gable looked up, tears welling in her old eyes, as the first pieces of the dark puzzle began to fall into place.
