Chapter 4 - The Threat in the DarkBack at the mansion, the atmosphere had shifted from luxurious serenity to a suffocating nightmare.

Night had fallen over Las Lomas of Connecticut. The estate security guards patrolled the perimeter with flashlights and K-9 units, while local police forensic teams dusted the grand hallway for fingerprints around the hidden floor panel.
Daniel had insisted on bringing Lily back home under heavy guard, tucking her safely into her second-floor bedroom with two private security agents stationed outside her door.
Now, standing alone in the grand hallway, Daniel stared down at the open wooden panel. The forensic team had propped it open, revealing the dark, yawning stairwell below.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, expecting an update from the hospital on Clara’s medical condition.
Instead, it was an unknown number sending a text message containing a single, chilling photograph taken from across the grand foyer—a shot of him standing alone by the open floor panel, illuminated by the harsh flash of a camera.
Beneath the photo was a typed text:
“You should have left the floor closed, Daniel. Some secrets are meant to stay buried. Leave the girl alone, or Lily’s bedroom will become the next vault.”
Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. He spun around, his eyes darting frantically across the dark, echoing shadows of the grand foyer.

The heavy oak front doors of the mansion remained locked. The security system showed no perimeter breaches.
Whoever had sent that message was either already inside the house... or hiding in plain sight among the people Daniel trusted most.
