Chapter 12 - Awakening in the LightThe sterile white walls of the hospital room felt profoundly different the following morning.

The harsh, fluorescent glare of emergency medicine had been replaced by warm, golden autumn sunlight streaming through the window blinds. Clara Vance sat propped up against a stack of pillows, sipping a cup of warm broth. Though her face remained pale and gaunt from years of malnourishment and absolute darkness, the haunted, terrified look in her dark eyes had begun to soften.
The door clicked open softly, and Daniel walked in, holding Lily by the hand.
Clara looked up, her breath catching in her throat. She set the broth down on the bedside table with trembling hands.
“Mr... Mr. Harrington,” Clara whispered, her voice raspy and fragile. “And... and little Lily.”
Lily stepped forward cautiously, releasing her father’s hand for a moment. She looked at Clara with her large, perceptive dark eyes—the same eyes that had first heard the cries echoing through the marble hallway.
“You’re out of the dark now,” Lily said simply, stepping closer to the bed and offering her worn-out stuffed rabbit as a gesture of comfort. “You don't have to be scared anymore.”
Clara stared at the stuffed toy, and for the first time in five years, the dam broke. Sobs racked her thin frame as she reached out, taking the rabbit with one hand and pulling Lily into a gentle, tearful embrace.
Daniel stood by the doorway, watching the two of them. A heavy, suffocating weight that had pressed down on his chest since the discovery of the secret vault finally began to lift.

“Richard Vance has been arrested, Clara,” Daniel said quietly, stepping forward. “He will never hurt you again. And whatever you need—medical care, housing, a fresh start—my foundation and I will back you completely. This house, and everything in it, is yours to help reclaim.”
Clara looked up at him, tears streaming down her cheeks, and offered a weak, but genuinely radiant smile. “Thank you... for listening to the house when nobody else would.”
