Chapter 7 - The Aftermath

When the heavy oak door finally clicked shut, locking out the noise, the chaos, and the parasites, an overwhelming, profound silence settled over the house.
I stood in the center of the living room. It smelled like stale beer, spilled soda, and cheap cologne. Sticky fingerprints marred the windows, and my grandmother’s antique porcelain mugs were littered across the coffee table—two of them cracked.
Arthur Sterling walked in behind me, sliding his briefcase shut with a soft click.
“Well,” Arthur sighed, adjusting his glasses. “That was certainly more entertaining than a standard contract dispute. Do you want my team to handle the property damage claims tomorrow morning?”
“Yes, Arthur,” I said, walking over to pick up one of the cracked mugs. I ran my thumb over the hairline fracture. “File every single claim to the absolute maximum extent of the law. I want an itemized invoice sent to Ryan and Jessica’s home address by 8:00 AM tomorrow.”
“Consider it done,” Arthur nodded. “What about your military leave? You only have seventy-two hours before you’re scheduled to fly back out to the base.”
I looked out the window at the peaceful, glimmering surface of the lake, listening to the gentle rustle of the evening wind through the oak trees.
“My leave doesn't start until the house is clean,” I said firmly.

Arthur smiled faintly. “I’ll leave you to it, Colonel. Call me if they try anything stupid.”
