Chapter 15 - Standing Tall

By the end of the month, the financial execution of Ryan and Jessica’s reckless lifestyle reached its final stage.

Arthur Sterling sent a final, concise update to my secure terminal.

Failing to meet the settlement deadline for the property damages and legal fees, Ryan’s primary bank accounts had been formally attached, and a lien had been placed on their suburban equity. Realizing he could no longer bluff his way out of catastrophe, Ryan had finally capitulated, signing a binding consent decree that legally barred him from ever setting foot on my property again.

As for Jessica, she had finally stopped calling my office. According to mutual acquaintances who dared whisper about the family soap opera, she had taken a part-time job at a local retail store—her first real job in over a decade—trying to piece together what remained of her shattered illusion of wealth.

They had wanted to break me. They had wanted me to cower, apologize, and hand over the keys to the only place in the world where I could finally breathe.

Instead, they had exposed their own emptiness.

Sitting at my command desk thousands of miles away, I looked down at a photograph tucked into the corner of my monitor—a picture of the sun setting over the calm, glassy waters of my lake house.

The water was smooth. The cabin was secure. And the woman standing behind the wheel of her life was stronger than they would ever comprehend.

I picked up my pen, signed off on the final logistics manifest for the morning patrol, and looked toward the horizon.

Ready for whatever came next.
