Chapter 17 - Whispers from the Past

Two days before the final handover, a secure digital message routed through Arthur Sterling’s law firm pinged on my private terminal.

It wasn't a frantic plea or an angry threat. It was a brief, official notification from local public records in Virginia.

Ryan and Jessica had officially listed their suburban split-level home for sale.

Without the cash flow from Ryan’s fraudulent consulting gigs, and crushed under the weight of mounting legal fees, property damage debts, and frozen credit lines, their lifestyle of cards had finally collapsed completely. They were downsizing into a tiny, cramped rental apartment on the other side of the county.

According to Arthur’s brief note, Jessica had tried to reach out to a few extended relatives for relocation help, only to find that her dramatic, entitled outbursts over the past year had alienated everyone.

They had spent a lifetime treating people as disposable resources, assuming their charm and entitlement would always catch them. Now, standing in an empty house with packing boxes stacked around them, they were finally experiencing the cold, unyielding reality of isolation.

I closed the document, cleared the screen, and didn't feel a single flicker of pity.
