Chapter 10 - Reclaiming the Peace

Sunday passed in a state of absolute, uninterrupted tranquility.

I spent the day reading on the back deck, kayaking out onto the glassy water of the lake as the sun climbed to its zenith, and cooking quiet, unhurried meals in my spotless kitchen.

There were no screaming children, no messy fingerprints, no arrogant demands from a freeloader brother-in-law, and no dismissive sneers from a sister who took my sacrifices for granted.

The illusion of their entitlement had shattered completely, leaving behind a sharp, undeniable truth: I didn't need them. I never had.

As Sunday evening rolled in, painting the sky in deep hues of violet and crimson, I sat by the large picture window of my living room, looking out over the water.

My phone remained completely silent. Arthur Sterling had emailed me a preliminary report confirming that Ryan and Jessica had received formal legal notice of the damages, and that their bank accounts had been flagged for asset freezing if payment wasn't rendered. They were currently too busy fighting their own legal dumpster fire to bother me again.

I took a slow breath, feeling the last remnants of tension melt away from my shoulders.

Tomorrow, I would put on my uniform, board the military transport, and return to active duty overseas, commanding my unit with a renewed, unshakeable focus.

And this lake house—every single floorboard, nail, and beam—would remain exactly what I built it to be: an impenetrable fortress of my own making.
