Chapter 5 - The Tables Turn

The silence on the porch was so absolute you could hear the wind rustling through the oak trees.

Ryan looked wildly around the yard, desperately searching for someone to back him up. “Jessica! Get out here! Tell them! Tell them she’s lying!”

The front door creaked open, and Jessica stepped out onto the porch, trembling from head to toe. Her face was stark white, her designer sunglasses dangling from her hand.

“Emily...” Jessica whispered, her voice cracking pathetically. “What... what is happening? Why are there soldiers here?”

I walked slowly up the porch steps, stopping inches away from my sister. The power dynamic had completely inverted in less than an hour.

“You told me the house sits empty most of the year,” I said softly, every word landing like lead weights. “You told me I was inconvenient. You told me to drive away.”

“We didn't know!” Jessica sobbed, her knees suddenly buckling as she gripped the porch railing for support. “You never said you were... you never told us you were in the military! You said you had a desk job!”

“You never bothered to ask,” I replied coldly.

Arthur Sterling stepped up beside me, flipping open his leather portfolio.

“Mr. and Mrs. Vance,” the attorney announced loudly enough for every guest trapped inside the house to hear. “Under Section 4 of the Virginia Property Rights Act, combined with federal statutes protecting active-duty service members from housing infringement and unlawful displacement, you and your twenty guests have precisely ten minutes to evacuate this premises.”

“Ten minutes?!” Ryan shrieked, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. “Are you out of your minds?! Where are we supposed to go? All our luggage is inside! We have kids! You can’t just throw us out into the street like criminals!”

“Actually,” Arthur smiled pleasantly, “that is precisely what we can do. Furthermore, my client has authorized an immediate itemized inventory of damages. Every broken mug, every trampled flower bed, every oil stain on this driveway, and every piece of missing property will be billed directly to your personal accounts. If payment is not rendered within forty-eight hours, we will seize your primary residence and garnish your wages.”

Ryan let out a strangled gasp, staggering backward until he hit the living room wall.

Inside the house, panic erupted. Guests began frantically grabbing purses, jackets, and children, rushing toward the front door like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

I turned my back on them, walking past my terrified sister, and stepped inside my pristine, quiet living room.

The reclamation had begun.
