Chapter 14 - The Unshakable Foundation

Back at the base, operations moved at a blistering, relentless pace.

My unit was tasked with coordinating a multi-national logistical supply drop for humanitarian and allied forces in a complex sector. It required absolute precision, split-second timing, and nerves of steel—the exact qualities that had kept me alive and rising through the ranks for eleven years.

One evening, after a grueling fourteen-hour shift in the command center, Marcus walked over with two cups of bitter instant coffee, handing one to me as I stared out at the desert night sky.

“You’ve been running circles around the rest of the staff this week, Colonel,” Marcus observed, leaning against the edge of the desk. “Even more focused than usual.”

I took a slow sip of the coffee, looking out past the perimeter fence where floodlights swept across the dust.

“When you spend years building something with your own hands, Marcus—whether it’s an operational unit or a home—you realize how important it is to protect its integrity,” I said quietly.

“Civilian drama still bothering you?” he asked.

“Not drama. Just cleanup,” I replied, a faint smile touching my lips. “Some people spend their whole lives taking shortcuts, building houses out of straw, and expecting everyone else to rescue them when the wind blows. They never learn that you can’t cheat foundation work.”

Marcus nodded approvingly. “Sounds like whoever crossed paths with you learned that lesson the hard way.”

“They had an accelerated masterclass.”
