Chapter 16 - The Final Deployment Phase

The desert heat shimmered across the tarmac of the forward operating base, distorting the horizon into wavy lines of blinding white and gold.

We were in the final weeks of our overseas deployment. The multi-national logistical supply operation we had been coordinating for months was running with clockwork precision, a testament to the ironclad discipline and meticulous planning of my unit.

In the command tent, the steady hum of tactical radios and computer monitors created a familiar, soothing background rhythm.

Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance stepped away from the comms station, holding a secured tablet.

“Colonel Carter, final rotation schedules have just cleared command headquarters in Washington,” Marcus reported, his expression professional yet carrying a hint of satisfaction. “Our relief unit is scheduled to touch down in exactly fourteen days. After that, you’re officially stateside for an extended stateside assignment.”

I looked up from the deployment maps spread across my desk, a genuine sense of accomplishment settling over my shoulders.

“Fourteen days, Marcus,” I repeated quietly. “Let’s make sure every sector remains locked down until the final handoff.”
