Chapter 12 - The Fallout in Suburbia

While I was thousands of miles away managing tactical logistics and base security, my family’s fragile world was completely unraveling back in the States.

Arthur Sterling, my attorney, sent a secure encrypted brief to my military terminal detailing the aftermath of the eviction.

Stripped of their temporary refuge at my lake house, Ryan and Jessica had been forced to cram their family of four—plus mountains of luggage—back into their modest, highly mortgaged suburban split-level. But the real crisis wasn't spatial; it was financial.

Arthur’s firm had officially slapped Ryan with an itemized property damage bill totaling over twelve thousand dollars, covering the cracked porcelain mugs, the ruined landscaping, the oil-stained asphalt driveway, and professional deep-cleaning services.

Simultaneously, the legal notices regarding Vanguard Industrial and Ryan’s shady freelance consulting gigs had triggered audits by state and federal tax agencies.

For eleven years, Ryan had lived like a big shot on borrowed money and extravagant lies, always assuming someone else—usually me—would quietly clean up his messes. Now, the bills were coming due all at once.

According to Arthur’s report, Ryan had spent the entire week calling every single relative in our extended family, spinning wild, hysterical stories about how I had “abused my government position” to steal his dignity and throw his children onto the street.

Nobody answered his calls anymore. People were finally starting to see through the smoke and mirrors.
