Chapter 13 - The Desperate Voicemail

Two weeks into my deployment, while reviewing supply chain reports in the command tent, my secure satellite phone buzzed.

It wasn't a military frequency. It was a forwarded voicemail routed from my civilian number through Arthur’s office switchboard.

I tapped the screen and hit play.

Jessica’s voice filled the small earpiece, sounding frantic, exhausted, and broken in a way I had never heard before.

> “Emily... please. I know you’re probably ignoring my calls, but you have to listen to me. Ryan is losing his mind. The bank is threatening to foreclose on the house, his truck was repossessed this morning, and our lawyer says if we don't pay your legal firm’s invoice by Friday, Ryan’s wages are going to be garnished by seventy percent. We can’t even buy groceries, Emily. Please... you’re my sister. Can’t we just talk? Just... please help us.”

I listened to the message once. Then, I deleted it.

There was no anger in my chest anymore—just a profound, hollow indifference.

For over a decade, I had cushioned every blow for Jessica. I had sent money when her car broke down, paid for family medical emergencies, and let her live in my shadow while she and Ryan mocked my quiet, seemingly boring life.

They hadn't loved me as a sister. They had loved me as a safety net.

And safety nets don't rescue people who spend their lives trying to set them on fire.
