Chapter 8 - The Public Unraveling

For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the vicinity was the soft tinkling of piano music from the hotel lobby.
Vanessa’s jaw dropped, her champagne glass trembling in her manicured hand.
“What... what did you just say?” Richard stammered, his voice pitching upward in sheer panic. “Are you out of your mind? What kind of sick joke is that? You’re just a grieving widow who knows nothing about business—”
“Am I?” I interrupted, stepping closer to him, my gaze locking onto his terrified eyes with the unyielding weight of absolute authority.
Before Richard could recover his voice, the double doors of the country club ballroom swung open.
Arthur Sterling, senior managing partner of Sterling & Vance Corporate Law, walked into the room accompanied by two federal corporate investigators in sharp grey suits. They didn't look like party guests. They walked with the precise, methodical stride of men executing a legal execution.
My parents, who had been standing nearby smiling smugly at the crowd, suddenly froze as they watched the attorneys head directly toward our table.
“Good evening, Mrs. Vance,” Arthur Sterling said formally, stopping right in front of me and offering a respectful nod.
The entire room stared in stunned silence. My mother’s hand flew to her mouth, her eyes darting between the high-powered attorney and me.
“Mrs. Vance?” my father muttered, stepping forward, his face flushed with confusion and rising dread. “Arthur... why are you calling her Mrs. Vance? That’s Daniel’s last name, but—who are you?”
Arthur Sterling turned slowly toward my father, looking at him with mild, professional disdain.
“Mr. Sterling represents Meridian Aeronautics, Dad,” I answered for him, my voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade. “The company Daniel built. The company I now own.”
The room seemed to tilt on its axis.
“Own?” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking shrilly. “What are you talking about?! Daniel was just a mid-level engineer! You don't own anything! You’re just a parasite living off crumbs!”

“Shut up, Vanessa,” I whispered, the sheer frost in my tone freezing her in her tracks.
