Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of the Spared

Vanessa snapped.

The pristine, fragile illusion of the favorite daughter shattered instantly. With a feral cry of rage and panic, Vanessa lunged across the table toward me, her fingernails clawing outward.

“You bitch!” she shrieked. “You ruined us! You ruined my life!”

Before she could touch me, the two federal investigators stepped smoothly between us, gently but immovably pinning Vanessa’s arms to her sides. She thrashed and wailed like a spoiled child denied a toy, her expensive makeup streaked with angry tears as the country club guests whispered in horror around us.

My father stood frozen a few feet away, his face drained of all color, looking older than his years. He looked at Richard in ruin, looked at Vanessa in hysterics, and finally, slowly, turned his terrified eyes toward me.

He realized, with crushing, agonizing clarity, that the daughter they had ignored, mocked, and discarded was now the most powerful person in the room.

“Claire...” my father whispered, his voice cracking, taking a hesitant step forward. “Please... we’re your family. Can’t we talk about this? Can’t we fix this together?”

I turned my back on him, adjusting the cuffs of my midnight-blue dress.

“When I called you from the funeral home, begging you to stand by my coffins, you told me your priority was Vanessa’s birthday,” I said, not bothering to look back. “You made your choice that afternoon.”

I signaled to Arthur Sterling and the federal agents.

“Lock down all remaining assets associated with Vanguard Industrial,” I instructed calmly, my voice ringing clear across the silent ballroom. “And have federal marshals escort Mr. Vance to the precinct for processing.”

“Right away, Chairwoman Vance,” Sterling replied.

I turned and walked toward the grand exit of the country club, leaving behind the shattered remnants of the family that thought grief would make me weak. The night air outside was cold, crisp, and completely clear.

For the first time since the accident, I took a deep, unobstructed breath.

The chessboard was mine.
