Chapter 16 - The Audit of the Past

Six months after the Meridian Global Summit, the legal and financial shockwaves of Vanguard Industrial’s collapse had completely reshaped the Midwestern corporate landscape. Richard was serving his federal sentence in Indiana, and the once-glamorous lifestyle Vanessa had fought so desperately to maintain was a distant, humiliating memory.

According to reports quietly delivered to my desk by Arthur Sterling, my parents had been forced to put their Linwood Avenue home up for sale. The accumulated debts, legal fees, and unpaid loans had finally caught up with them.

One Tuesday afternoon, while reviewing structural expansion plans for the newly funded Daniel, Emma, and Noah Vance Foundation, my office door opened quietly.

My executive assistant, a sharp and professional young woman named Rachel, stepped inside, holding a thick, cream-colored envelope.

“Chairwoman Vance, mail delivery for you,” Rachel said, placing the envelope neatly on the corner of my desk. “It’s postmarked from Columbus, Ohio.”

I looked down at the handwriting. It was my mother’s script—shaky, cramped, and stripped of all its former arrogant flourish.

“Thank you, Rachel. That will be all.”

When the door clicked shut, I stared at the envelope for a long moment. I didn't feel anger. I didn't feel curiosity. I felt only the detached, clinical objectivity of someone observing a specimen under a microscope.

I picked up a silver letter opener, slit the paper, and pulled out a single sheet of lined notebook paper.
