Chapter 4 - The Fraudulent Proposal

The documents inside the dossier revealed a web of financial desperation that made my blood run cold.

Two months before the accident, Richard—Vanessa’s husband—had approached Meridian Aeronautics seeking a multi-million-dollar sub-contract for his manufacturing firm, Vanguard Industrial. Their business was on the verge of bankruptcy due to years of reckless spending, embezzlement scandals within their management, and unpaid tax liens.

Richard had begged Daniel for a lifeline, claiming that without Meridian’s backing, Vanguard would collapse and ruin him and Vanessa socially and financially.

I turned the page, looking at Daniel’s handwritten notes scribbled in the margin of the financial audit report.

“Declined. Balance sheets are heavily falsified. Accounts receivable are entirely fabricated. This is systemic corporate fraud. If we touch this contract, Meridian’s legal liability would be catastrophic. Denied.”

Daniel had protected Meridian’s integrity. He had refused to throw good money after a criminal enterprise masquerading as a family business.

Then, I looked at a secondary document clipped to the back of the file: a draft letter of intent dated three days after the funeral.

It was an automated legal notification from Meridian’s corporate counsel, addressed to Vanguard Industrial, officially reaffirming that Daniel’s passing had not changed company policy—and that the fraud investigation into Vanguard’s application was being forwarded to federal regulatory authorities.

Richard and Vanessa were walking straight toward a financial guillotine. They thought Daniel’s death meant a new billionaire benefactor was going to bail them out of their debts.

They had no idea who actually owned the guillotine now.
