Chapter 3 - The Secret Legacy

After my mother left, I didn't cry. I stood up, walked into Daniel’s private home office, and locked the door behind me.

For fourteen years, Daniel had shielded me and our children from the chaotic, blinding glare of corporate wealth. To the outside world, he was just a quiet, unassuming man who consulted for tech firms.

The truth was vastly different.

Daniel had been the founder and sole controlling owner of Meridian Aeronautics, a private aerospace engineering titan he built quietly over twelve years. While other defense contractors flaunted their billions, Daniel operated in the shadows, securing government contracts and developing next-generation aeronautical guidance systems.

Very few people outside the elite defense sector knew his name.

Even fewer knew mine.

Before we had Emma and Noah, I had been an algorithmic systems architect. I had designed Meridian’s original core navigation software before stepping away to raise our children. My name was still embedded in the root architecture of every patent the company held.

And under Daniel’s meticulously drafted estate plan, filed with a top-tier corporate law firm in Chicago, every single controlling share, asset, and patent had passed directly to me.

My parents had no idea. They still thought Daniel was a mid-level engineer who made a decent living, while they constantly bragged about Vanessa’s husband, Richard—a man who ran a struggling manufacturing plant and spent money he didn't have.

I unlocked Daniel’s heavy mahogany filing cabinet. Inside sat a thick dossier marked Confidential: Corporate Audit & Proposals.

I opened it and started reading.
