Chapter 13 - The Meridian Foundation

A week after my parents' visit, Arthur Sterling arrived at the house with a leather briefcase containing a new proposal.

We sat in the sunroom, surrounded by the warm, soft light filtering through the glass panes where my children’s toys had once been neatly organized.

“Chairwoman Vance,” Sterling began, opening the portfolio. “Given the restructuring of Meridian’s public outreach and philanthropic budget, the board is waiting for your directive on our annual grant allocations. Historically, Daniel directed a significant portion toward aerospace engineering scholarships at major universities.”

I looked out the window, watching a pair of blue jays land on the oak tree in the backyard.

“Change the parameters, Arthur,” I instructed quietly.

“In what way, ma’am?”

“Establish a permanent, fully endowed philanthropic initiative called the Daniel, Emma, and Noah Vance Foundation,” I said, every word steady and deliberate. “The fund will provide full college scholarships, trauma counseling resources, and emergency financial sanctuary for families who have lost children due to reckless, intoxicated driving.”

Sterling looked up, his professional facade slipping for a brief second to reveal deep, genuine respect.

“That is... an extraordinary tribute, Mrs. Vance,” he murmured softly. “How much capital would you like allocated to the endowment initial rollout?”

“Fifty million dollars,” I replied without hesitation. “Transfer the funds from my personal holding accounts immediately. I want it operational by the end of the month.”

“Consider it done, Chairwoman.”
