Chapter 5 - The Chessboard Opens

My phone rang, breaking the heavy silence of the office.

It was an incoming call from an unsaved number with a Washington D.C. area code.

I pressed answer.

“Mrs. Vance?” a crisp, professional voice asked.

“Speaking,” I replied, my voice steady and cold.

“This is Arthur Sterling, senior managing partner at Sterling & Vance Corporate Law. First, please accept my deepest, most sincere condolences for your unimaginable loss.”

“Thank you, Mr. Sterling. Let’s skip the formalities. What is the status of the Meridian transition?”

There was a brief pause on the line, likely as the high-powered attorney adjusted to the razor-sharp tone in my voice.

“All primary assets, shares, and voting rights have been legally transferred to your name, Mrs. Vance,” Sterling answered smoothly. “You are now the sole controlling owner and chairwoman of Meridian Aeronautics. Furthermore, regarding the Vanguard Industrial situation—the fraudulent contract application submitted by your brother-in-law, Richard Vance—our compliance team is awaiting your final directive. Shall we hand the file over to the federal prosecutor, or would you prefer a different approach?”

I looked out the window at the grey autumn sky, remembering my father’s cold voice over the phone: “Today is your sister’s birthday. We can’t come.”

I remembered my mother’s dismissive sneer: “You’re making yourself look pathetic.”

They wanted me to be weak. They wanted me to sit in a dark room and mourn alone while they celebrated their superficial lives on borrowed money and fraudulent hopes.

A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of my lips.

“Don’t hand it to the prosecutors just yet, Mr. Sterling,” I said softly.

“Ma’am?”

“Let them keep believing the door is open,” I instructed, my eyes locked on the reflection of my own unblinking gaze in the dark window pane. “Let them schedule their meetings. Let them plan their grand expansion. Let them build their castle on sand.”

I paused, letting the silence emphasize every word.

“I want to be the one who swings the axe.”
