Chapter 6 - The Invitation to the Trap

Two weeks after the funeral, the illusion of my family’s perfect, carefree life began to crack under the weight of mounting financial ruin.

It started with a frantic phone call from my mother, the first time she had dialed my number without a tone of reprimand since my husband and children were buried.

“Claire,” my mother began, her voice unusually rushed and nervous. “Are you... are you free this Friday evening? Vanessa and Richard are hosting a small family dinner at their country club. They want you to come.”

I sat at Daniel’s mahogany desk, swirling a cup of cold black coffee, staring at the corporate restructuring proposals on my screen.

“A family dinner?” I asked, keeping my tone perfectly flat. “Strange. You couldn't make it to my husband and children's funeral because of a birthday reservation, but now you want me at a country club?”

There was an awkward, breathless pause on the line.

“Oh, don’t start that again, Claire,” my mother snapped, her defensive irritation quickly flaring through. “We explained all of that. Vanessa was fragile. Anyway, that’s not why I’m calling. Richard has been trying to reach the executives at Meridian Aeronautics for weeks regarding a vital business contract. Since Daniel passed away, nobody at Meridian is returning his calls or emails.”

She lowered her voice, adopting a conspiratorial, wheedling tone.

“We know Daniel kept his business life private, Claire. We were wondering... since you were his wife, do you have any contacts at Meridian? Can you put in a good word for Richard? If Vanguard Industrial doesn't secure this partnership by the end of the month, Richard says... well, things will be very difficult for them financially.”

I stared at the wall, a bitter, humourless smile touching my lips. They didn't care about my well-being, my grief, or my loneliness. They only cared that their lifeline to wealth was slipping through their fingers.

“Tell Richard I’ll be there on Friday,” I said quietly.

“Oh—truly?” My mother’s voice instantly brightened with greedy relief. “Wonderful! Wear something nice, Claire. Don’t show up looking like a ghost. Vanessa wants everyone to look their best.”
