Chapter 9 - The Fallout at the Board

By the following morning, the scandal at St. Jude’s Elementary had exploded across local news networks and digital media outlets.
Headlines screamed across the morning papers: “PRIVATE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL AND TEACHER ARRESTED IN FEDERAL CHILD ABUSE PROBE,” and “MYSTERY MILITARY GENERAL UNCOVERS SHOCKING CLASSROOM ABUSE.”
Principal Vance and Mrs. Gable had been formally charged and denied bail, facing lengthy prison sentences as the school’s board of trustees scrambled in absolute terror to distance themselves from the criminal negligence. Donors pulled their funding by the millions, and the school’s accreditation was permanently revoked by the state education board.
I sat in my home office with Emma fast asleep upstairs in her bed, her breathing calm and regular, free from the nightmares that had plagued her previous nights.
My encrypted phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was a secure call from the Pentagon.
I pressed accept.
“General Carter,” a senior defense official’s voice came through clearly. “We’ve reviewed the operational incident report and the federal intervention at St. Jude’s. The Secretary has been briefed.”
“I acted in defense of my minor child under direct federal child endangerment statutes,” I replied, my tone steady and uncompromising.
“We know, General,” the official sighed. “And frankly, the Department stands by your actions entirely. However, the media circus surrounding your true identity is drawing unwanted attention. How do you wish to proceed?”
I looked out the window at the quiet, peaceful suburban night.
“Let them talk, sir,” I said quietly. “My daughter’s safety was never a secret mission, and now that the threat has been neutralized, I will handle her transition to a safe environment personally.”

“Understood, General. Dismissed.”
