Chapter 10 - A New Constellation

Three days after the incident, Emma and I sat out on the back porch under a clear, starlit autumn sky.

She held a small, silver-plated telescope I had bought her—a real one, far better than the plastic toys she used to play with. She pointed it upward, squinting through the lens with intense, focused concentration.

“Daddy! Look!” she whispered excitedly, grabbing my sleeve. “I found the Andromeda Galaxy! Just like we read about!”

I leaned down, looking through the eyepiece at the faint, beautiful swirl of distant starlight millions of light-years away.

“It’s brilliant, sweetheart,” I smiled, wrapping my arm around her shoulders.

The storm had passed. The darkness of that concrete storage room was behind us, replaced by the vast, beautiful expanse of the universe and the unshakable certainty that no matter what shadows tried to creep in, I would always be there to pull her into the light.

I wasn't just a General in the United States Army.

I was Emma’s father. And that was the only title that ever truly mattered.
