Chapter 18 - The Ribbon Ceremony

Toward the end of the morning session, Principal Henderson took the podium at the front of the gymnasium to announce the science fair ribbon recipients.
“We have seen extraordinary creativity and hard work from every single student today,” Principal Henderson announced into the microphone, smiling warmly out at the sea of families. “However, one project stood out for its remarkable scientific precision, incredible detail, and passionate presentation.”
She paused for dramatic effect.
“For the third-grade division... first place goes to Emma Carter!”
The gymnasium erupted into enthusiastic applause. Emma gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in utter disbelief, before a massive, beaming smile broke across her face.
She looked back at me, her eyes shining with tears of joy.
I gave her a sharp, proud military salute, followed by a warm, encouraging nod. She laughed, bounded up to the podium, and accepted a gleaming blue ribbon and a certificate from Principal Henderson, holding them high for the crowd to see.
