Chapter 17 - The Exhibition Hall

By 10:00 AM, the school gymnasium had been transformed into a bustling universe of cardboard volcanoes, baking-soda rockets, and meticulously painted papier-mâché planets.

Parents, teachers, and students milled through the rows of tables, chatting excitedly and admiring the hard work of the children.

Emma stood proudly beside her table, where her solar system model rested under a hand-drawn sign that read: THE GALAXY & BEYOND - BY EMMA CARTER.

When Mr. Davis, her science teacher, walked by with the clipboard judges, Emma didn't freeze or look down the way she used to at St. Jude’s. Instead, her voice rang out clear, confident, and full of passion as she explained the orbital mechanics of Jupiter’s moons and the atmospheric composition of Neptune.

I stood a few paces back, leaning against the gymnasium wall with my hands tucked into my pockets, watching her shine.

The contrast between who she had been months ago—huddled in terror on a cold concrete floor—and the brilliant, radiant child standing before me now was staggering. Resilience wasn't just about surviving the dark; it was about learning how to build your own light.
