Chapter 5 - The Investigation Begins

The heavy oak doors of the principal’s office swung open without a knock.
Captain Sarah Miller walked in, her boots clicking sharply against the linoleum floor. She stopped two paces from my desk, snapped a crisp, flawless military salute, and held it until I returned the gesture.
“General Carter, perimeter secured. All administrative exits locked down under federal protective custody clauses,” Sarah reported in a sharp, professional tone.
Behind her, Principal Vance gripped the edge of his desk so hard his knuckles turned stark white. Mrs. Gable was quietly sobbing into a tissue, her arrogance completely evaporated.
“At ease, Captain,” I said, lowering my hand. “Did the medical liaison arrive with the team?”
“Yes, sir. A medic is currently examining Emma in the nurse’s station. She’s shaken, but stable.”
I felt a tight knot in my chest loosen slightly at the news, though the cold fury in my veins remained entirely unquenched.
“Good. Have the medical report documented and attached to the formal federal complaint,” I instructed. “I want every detail of the physical trauma recorded.”
“Right away, General.” Sarah turned her sharp gaze toward Principal Vance and Mrs. Gable, her eyes narrowing with professional disdain. “Are these the subjects?”
“They are,” I replied.
Principal Vance swallowed hard, finally finding a shred of his shattered voice. “N-Now see here! You can’t just bring armed soldiers into a private school! We have rights! We’ll call our board of trustees, we’ll call the superintendent, we’ll—we’ll sue!”
I walked slowly back toward the desk, looking down at the terrified administrator.
“You can call whoever you like, Vance,” I said quietly. “But right now, your school is under federal investigation for unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment, and physical assault. And Mrs. Gable is going to answer for what she did to my daughter.”
Mrs. Gable burst into loud, hysterical tears, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She was unruly! She wouldn't listen! He’s just a military brute trying to intimidate a schoolteacher! The board will never let you get away with this!”
I didn't raise my voice. I didn't yell. I simply looked at her the way an officer looks at an insubordinate soldier who doesn't yet realize her court-martial is already signed and sealed.
“You locked an eight-year-old child in a dark room because she couldn't answer a math question fast enough,” I said, every word like falling ice. “You aren't a teacher, Mrs. Gable. You’re a coward with a badge of authority.”
I turned to Captain Miller.
“Escort Mrs. Gable and Principal Vance to the conference room. Ensure all security cameras and digital logs in the storage wing are downloaded and secured immediately.”
“Ma’am—sir! Yes, sir!” Sarah barked.

As the military police officers stepped forward to corral the principal and the terrified teacher, I knew this was only the beginning. They thought they could sweep Emma’s trauma under the rug.
They were about to learn what happens when a General takes it personally.
