Chapter 3 - The Principal’s Defense

Principal David Vance was seated behind a large oak desk, leaning forward as he spoke to a woman wearing a sharp tweed blazer and an expression of supreme annoyance.

The woman was Mrs. Gable.

“Mr. Carter!” Principal Vance barked, standing up with a flustered look. “You can’t just walk in here! This is a private conference! Mrs. Gable and I are discussing curriculum adjustments, and—”

“Sit down, Vance,” I said.

The command wasn't a suggestion. It carried the precise, razor-sharp cadence of an operational order given on a live firing range.

Principal Vance froze midway out of his chair, blinking in shock. Mrs. Gable scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.

“Well! I never!” Mrs. Gable snapped, turning her nose up at me. “Mr. Carter, or whatever your civilian name is, you will show respect in this office. Your daughter has been disruptive all week, and—”

I closed the distance between the door and the desk in four long strides, placing both hands flat on the polished wood. I leaned in, my gaze locking onto Mrs. Gable with such intense, cold fury that she actually recoiled in her seat.

“You touched my daughter,” I whispered. The quietness of my voice was far more terrifying than a shout.

Mrs. Gable’s eyes flickered with a sudden, nervous flash of uncertainty, though she quickly masked it with haughty indignation. “I beg your pardon? Emma was being insolent and refused to participate in class exercises! A firm hand is required when dealing with unruly children who lack proper discipline at home—especially coming from a single-parent household with no mother figure—”

“You locked an eight-year-old child in a dark storage room,” I cut her off, my voice dropping an octave. “You humiliated her in front of her peers, you screamed at her, and you left physical bruises on her arm.”

Principal Vance cleared his throat, attempting to regain control of his office. He adjusted his tie, trying to project administrative authority.

“Now see here, Mr. Carter,” Vance said defensively. “Let’s not exaggerate. Mrs. Gable is one of our most valued educators. If Emma was placed in the equipment room, it was merely a temporary timeout to curb her behavioral outbursts. Children these days are so sensitive, and frankly, your lax parenting style—”

I didn't let him finish. I reached into my jacket pocket, pulled out my encrypted satellite phone, and dialed a direct, pre-programmed three-digit extension.

“What are you doing?” Vance demanded, standing up fully. “Put that phone away or I’ll have campus security remove you!”

I held up one finger, silencing him instantly without breaking eye contact.

“This is General Carter,” I spoke clearly into the phone, ignoring the color draining from Vance’s face as the word General registered. “Activate the legal detachment and military police liaison for District Four. I require an immediate federal safety inspection and child-endangerment investigation initiated at St. Jude’s Elementary School in Columbus. Dispatch units now. Over.”

I hung up the phone and slipped it back into my pocket.

Principal Vance stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. Mrs. Gable turned entirely pale, her arrogant posture completely collapsing.

“G-General?” Vance stammered, his voice cracking. “Did you say... General?”
