Chapter 8 - The Reunion in the Nurse's Station

Leaving Arthur and the federal magistrates to process the paperwork, I walked down the quiet hallway toward the school nurse’s station.
When I pushed open the door, I found Emma sitting on the examination table, swinging her legs gently. A friendly military medic in scrubs was packing up a small first-aid kit, and a cup of apple juice sat half-finished on the tray beside her.
When Emma saw me, her face lit up with an instantaneous, radiant smile.
“Daddy!”
She hopped off the table and ran straight into my arms, burying her face against my chest. I scooped her up, holding her tightly, feeling the lingering tension finally drain from her small frame.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?” I asked, kissing the top of her head.
“My arm doesn't hurt anymore,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around my neck. “And the nice lady gave me apple juice. Are we going home now, Daddy?”
“We are going home,” I promised, my voice thick with emotion. “And you never have to come back to this school again. I’m pulling you out today, and we’re going to find a place where you are safe, respected, and loved.”
Emma nodded against my shoulder, her breathing slow and peaceful.
As I carried her out through the main lobby, past the staring parents and whispering teachers, Captain Miller held the exit door open for us. The matte-green tactical SUVs still idled outside, their engines purring with quiet power.
We climbed into the back of my SUV, and as we pulled away from St. Jude’s Elementary for the very last time, I looked in the rearview mirror at the imposing brick building fading into the distance.
They thought I was a nobody.

They learned the hard way that a father’s protection knows no rank, and respects no boundaries.
