Chapter 14 - The Science Fair Project

Two months passed in a blur of peace, stability, and healing.

Emma’s grades at Oakridge weren't just improving; she was thriving. The constant anxiety that had haunted her after the incident at St. Jude’s had been replaced by a bright, inquisitive confidence.

One evening, we sat at the dining room table surrounded by cardboard, construction paper, and glitter.

“Daddy, do you think my model of the solar system is big enough?” Emma asked anxiously, holding up a styrofoam ball painted a swirling shade of blue and green.

“It’s the best planet Earth I’ve ever seen, sweetheart,” I smiled, helping her secure Saturn’s rings with a dab of hot glue.

“Mr. Davis said I can present it in front of the whole school at the autumn science fair next week,” she chattered excitedly. “Do you think you can come? Even if you have work at the base?”

I reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, feeling a deep, abiding gratitude that I was there to witness every single moment.

“I wouldn't miss it for the world, Emma,” I promised. “General’s orders.”

She beamed with pride, her bright eyes shining under the warm overhead light.
