Chapter 6 - The Doctor's Question

The paramedics moved with terrifying speed. One knelt beside me, slipping a tiny oxygen mask over Lily’s face while checking her pulse, while the other readied the stretcher. The ambient party noise had vanished entirely, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic hiss of medical oxygen and the pounding of my own heart in my ears.

Before stepping back to let the medical team work, Dr. Patel turned her gaze from the paramedics to my husband.

“Ryan,” Dr. Patel said, her voice cutting through the chaos with cold, surgical precision. “Did you authorize your mother to administer over-the-counter infant sedatives or gripe water containing alcohol and depressants to a seven-day-old newborn?”

The room went so quiet you could hear the air conditioning hum.

Ryan swallowed hard, his face draining of all color. He didn't answer right away, but his eyes darted nervously toward his mother before dropping back to the floor.

“Ryan answered me,” Dr. Patel pressed relentlessly, her eyes narrowing. “Because that tube in my hand is a concentrated herbal sedative syrup containing alcohol and valerian root—substances strictly contraindicated for infants under six months, let alone a seven-day-old baby. It causes central nervous system depression and respiratory failure. Did you know she was giving this to your child, or did you help her purchase it?”

Ryan stammered, raising a hand defensively. “I... Mom mentioned that Lily was fussy and that she used to give it to me when I was a baby to help me sleep through the night so we could get some rest. She said it was harmless!”

“Harmless?” I screamed, the full horror finally breaking through my shock. “She’s seven days old, Ryan! You gave your mother permission to drug our newborn baby behind my back just so your mother’s stupid party wouldn't be interrupted?”

“We had to rush her to the hospital!” Dr. Patel interrupted sharply. “Move out of the way, paramedics are taking her now.”
