Chapter 19 - The Rebuilt Life

My consulting business had experienced its best year yet, expanding into a full-scale financial advisory firm with two junior partners working under my guidance. I had financial independence, professional respect, and complete autonomy over my life.

There were no toxic Sunday dinners to dread, no unsolicited criticisms about how I held my child, and no hovering mother-in-law attempting to drug my baby behind my back. My parents visited often, bringing homemade meals and holding Lily with genuine, unconditional love.
One afternoon, while reviewing client portfolios at my home desk, my mother walked into the office carrying a cup of herbal tea and smiling warmly.
“How are the numbers looking today, boss?” Mom asked, setting the mug down.
