Chapter 16 - The Deposition

The conference room on the tenth floor of our attorney’s Manhattan office smelled of fresh carpet and intimidation.
It was time for the formal pre-trial depositions. Ryan sat across the mahogany table flanked by a high-priced divorce lawyer he could barely afford, looking hollowed-out and desperate. Judith wasn't even permitted in the building; her criminal defense attorney had advised her to stay away while prosecutors reviewed the child endangerment charges.
My lawyer, Sarah Vance, slid a certified copy of the hospital toxicology report and Dr. Patel’s sworn deposition across the table.
“Mr. Caldwell,” Sarah began, her voice calm and absolute. “Let’s review the events of October 14th. You stated under oath in your initial response that you were unaware of what your mother administered to your seven-day-old daughter.”
Ryan swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward his attorney. “I... I didn't know the exact chemical name of the syrup.”
“Did you know she intended to administer a sedative substance containing alcohol and valerian root to quiet the infant?” Sarah pressed, pointing to a highlighted text message extracted from Ryan’s phone records.
The screen projection on the wall lit up with a text message sent by Ryan to Judith two days before the shower: “Just give her a few drops of whatever you used on me when I was colicky, we need her to sleep through the party so Mom isn't stressed.”
The room went dead silent. Ryan’s attorney lowered his pen, letting out a long, quiet sigh of defeat.

Ryan stared at the projected text, his face turning ghostly white. The lie he had built his defense on shattered completely.
