Chapter 4 - The Question

Ryan stepped forward, his face pale with sudden shock. “What? Are you crazy? It’s just a party, why are you calling an ambulance—”
“Something about Lily’s respiratory rate and lethargy deeply concerns me,” Dr. Patel interrupted, her hands moving with practiced speed. “She needs to be evaluated immediately.”
I held my daughter closer to my chest, my hands shaking uncontrollably. Lily’s eyelids barely fluttered. Her breathing was shallow, far too slow for a newborn.
“Lily?” I choked out, tears instantly hot in my eyes. “Baby, look at me.”
Dr. Patel looked up from the infant, her eyes locking onto mine. “Nora, what has she had to eat today?”
“Breast milk,” I answered quickly, my voice trembling. “Only breast milk. Nothing else.”
Before I could finish, Judith chimed in, far too fast: “She’s been using those supplemental formula packets from the hospital, hasn’t she? I told her she wasn't producing enough—”
I whipped my head around. “No. I am exclusively breastfeeding.”
Then my mind flashed back to the kitchen twenty minutes ago. The quiet room. Judith standing alone by the counter with a fussy newborn.
“What did you give her in the kitchen, Judith?” I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper.
Judith’s face tightened into a defensive mask. “Don’t you dare accuse me of something in my own home—”
May you like
“I’m not accusing you. Tell the doctor what you put in her mouth.”
Judith looked frantically toward Ryan. And Ryan—my husband of three years—looked down at the floor.
