Chapter 2 - The Excuse

“Judith, give her back,” I said, my voice tight with immediate panic.

My husband, Ryan, appeared beside us, putting a warm, heavy hand on my shoulder. “Relax, Nora. Mom’s only trying to help.”

Judith smiled brightly toward the professional photographer she had hired for the event while expertly rearranging Lily’s blanket. “First-time mothers are always so tense,” she announced to the surrounding circle of admiring women. “They transmit all that nervous energy right to the baby.”

Then she began explaining motherhood to the room as if I were a clueless spectator. According to Judith, women my age made everything far too complicated.

“She’s always fussy because Nora keeps feeding her on demand,” Judith declared, smoothing down her designer blouse. Several guests chuckled politely. “A baby needs structure. I calmed her down in minutes the second I took her into the kitchen.”

Something about those words struck a cold, uncomfortable chord in my chest.

Ten minutes earlier, I had excused myself to use the restroom. While I was gone, Judith had taken Lily into the kitchen to show her off to a neighbor. When she returned, my daughter had been unusually quiet—limp, heavy, and breathing in a slow, strange rhythm.

At the time, I had blamed it on newborn exhaustion. Now, standing in the crowded, loud living room, my maternal instincts flared violently.

I reached out my arms. “Give me my daughter, Judith.”

Judith turned away, shifting Lily higher against her shoulder. “She’s fine, stop fussing.”

“Give me my daughter. Now.”
