Chapter 14 - The Confrontation at the Office

Two weeks after we left, Ryan attempted a desperate maneuver. Knowing he was blocked on my phone and banned from my parents' property, he waited for me outside the parking garage of my pediatrician’s office when I brought Lily in for her two-week post-discharge checkup.
As I unbuckled Lily’s car seat in the backseat of my car, Ryan stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.
“Nora! Wait, please,” Ryan begged, his hair unwashed, his suit wrinkled. He looked ten years older than he had at the baby shower.
I froze, positioning my body defensively between him and the car door. “Get away from my car, Ryan.”
“Nora, I’m sorry,” he choked out, tears pooling in his eyes. “Mom has moved into a cheap motel, I’m facing suspension at work, and CPS is threatening to strip my parental rights entirely. I lost everything. Please... let me see my daughter.”
I looked at him—the man who had watched his mother poison our newborn child, who had called me overprotective while our baby was being sedated, and who had chosen his family’s comfort over his wife and child.
“You didn't lose everything, Ryan,” I said coldly. “You traded your family for your mother’s approval. And you lost the only person who ever genuinely cared about you.”

I slammed the rear car door locked, got into the driver’s seat, and drove out of the garage without looking back in the rearview mirror.
