Chapter 12 - The CPS Interview

On Wednesday morning, a state child protective services caseworker named investigator Hayes arrived at my parents' house to conduct a formal evaluation.
My father welcomed her into the living room, while my mother held Lily in the nursery upstairs. I sat across from Investigator Hayes at the dining table, placing the comprehensive medical records from Dr. Patel and the hospital toxicology report directly in front of her.
Hayes reviewed the documents, her professional expression growing grim as she read the chemical breakdown of the sedative syrup Judith had administered.
“Dr. Patel’s testimony and the emergency room admission notes are crystal clear,” Hayes said, looking up from the file. “This wasn't a misunderstanding, Mrs. Caldwell. This was unauthorized chemical endangerment of a neonate.”
“I didn't know anything about it until it happened,” I said steadily. “My husband and his mother systematically gaslit me for seven days, claiming my postpartum anxiety was the reason Lily cried, while secretly drugging her behind my back.”
“Your husband’s preliminary statement to our office was a disaster,” Hayes noted, shaking her head. “He admitted he knew his mother used that sedative in the past and didn't stop her. Our recommendation to family court will heavily favor sole legal and physical custody for you, with supervised visitation for the father only upon court approval.”
