Chapter 5 - A MIDNIGHT VISITORLater that night, unable to sleep in the massive guest bedroom, a maid summoned me to Maria's private quarters. The elderly woman lay in a velvet-draped bed, looking frail against the white linens, connected to a quiet oxygen monitor.
"Come closer, Sophie," Maria whispered, extending a feeble hand.
I sat on the edge of her mattress, taking her fingers in mine. "You knew who I was the moment you walked into Bellarosa, didn't you?"
"I've known where you were your entire life," Maria admitted, tears welling in her tired eyes. "I promised your mother on her deathbed that I would guard you from a distance. I paid your grandmother’s medical bills anonymously through a trust fund. When your savings ran out, I arranged for you to get the job at Bellarosa so I could finally see you with my own eyes before my time ran out."
May you like
"Your time?" I asked, a lump forming in my throat.
Maria coughed weakly, a spot of dark blood staining her lace handkerchief. "My heart is failing, child. The doctors give me weeks, perhaps days. Dante Moretti knows the old Don had a daughter. He’s been hunting for Vito’s bloodline to wipe out our claim to Brooklyn forever. I brought you into the light because you are the only one who can stop him."
