Chapter 20 - A NEW PATHThree years later.
The grand opening of the Maria Russo Free Medical Center was attended by hundreds of Brooklyn residents, doctors, and city officials. The massive state-of-the-art facility offered free, high-quality healthcare to low-income families across the borough.
I stood at the podium in a crisp white doctor's coat, holding a stethoscope in one hand and a speech in the other.
"Healing isn't just about medicine," I addressed the cheering crowd. "It's about giving people a second chance when life interrupts their plans."
I looked out into the audience. In the front row sat Antonio, dressed in a sharp suit, holding our newborn daughter in his arms. Beside him sat Emma—a former waitress from Bellarosa whom I had hired as the clinic's chief administrator.
As the ribbon was cut and the doors officially opened, a young waitress in a faded uniform approached me timidly from the crowd.
"Dr. Russo?" she asked nervously. "I... I don't have insurance, but my mother is very sick..."
May you like
I smiled warmly, taking her hand just as I had taken Maria's years ago.
"You're in the right place," I said softly, guiding her inside. "We take care of our family here."
