THE HEIR OF BROOKLYN / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - THE TEN-YEAR SECRETI looked up at him in shock. "She made it to Canada?"

"She lived peacefully in Montreal for ten years until illness took her," Antonio revealed, his dark eyes shining in the candlelight. "My father sworn me to secrecy because if the Morettis knew she was alive, they would have tracked her down. I’ve known about you since I was eighteen, Sophie. I’m the one who sent the anonymous monthly checks for your grandmother’s care."

"You... you were watching over me all along?"

"Every milestone," Antonio smiled faintly. "When you got accepted into nursing school, when you bought your first car, when you took the job at Bellarosa. I stayed in the shadows because I thought you were safer without me. But my mother knew time was running out. She wanted you to have your rightful place."

Understanding washed over me like a warm wave. The stoic, terrifying mafia boss wasn't my captor—he was my guardian angel.

Suddenly, Antonio’s encrypted phone buzzed on the floor. He answered it, listening for a few brief seconds before his face turned pale as stone.

He looked at me with deep sorrow. "It's the estate. The mole inside our security team... they just poisoned Maria's oxygen supply."
