Chapter 1 - INSIDE THE SHADOWS OF BELLAROSAThe police sirens started screaming outside the restaurant just minutes after Brooklyn’s most feared mafia boss walked in—and I had no idea they were there for me. Less than an hour earlier, I had been sitting beside his elderly mother, holding her medication in my hand. I thought I was helping a lonely old woman. I didn’t know I had just stepped into the middle of a war.
It had been an exhausting night at Bellarosa. Eight hours on my feet, burned fingers from hot plates, blisters inside my cheap shoes, and a stack of unpaid medical bills waiting at my cramped apartment. I was a waitress, invisible to the world. But when an elderly woman in a navy dress and pearls trembled while trying to reach her glass of water, I couldn't walk away. Her name was Maria. Sitting with her, I opened up about my broken dreams—how I had to drop out of nursing school when my grandmother’s medical bills wiped out my savings.
"Life interrupts our plans," Maria had whispered with a fragile smile. "But sometimes it puts us on a different path for a reason."
Then the heavy doors of Bellarosa swung open, and the air turned to ice. Antonio Russo stepped inside—custom charcoal suit, silver at his temples, a thin scar cutting through one eyebrow, and an aura of absolute authority. When he approached our table, he didn't look at his mother first. He looked at me with an intensity that made my stomach drop. Not anger. Not gratitude. Recognition. He leaned down, his deep voice barely audible above the ambient noise: "You helped my mother when nobody was watching. That is why you may be the only person in this restaurant I can trust tonight."
