THE HEIR OF BROOKLYN / Chapter 13 / 20

Chapter 13 - THE DOWAGER'S LAST BREATHWe drove back to Brooklyn like demons escaping hell, breaking through the estate gates at dawn.

The grand mansion was in absolute chaos. Guards were disarmed, and medical personnel were gathered outside Maria’s bedroom. We rushed inside. Maria lay propped up against pillows, her skin grey, her breathing faint and shallow.

"Sophie... Antonio..." she whispered, holding out her hands.

We knelt on opposite sides of her bed, holding her cold fingers.

"I don't have much time," Maria gasped, looking at me with immense pride. "Sophie... you have your mother's heart, but you have Vito's iron will. Do not let Dante destroy what we built. Protect the family."

"I will, Maria. I promise," I sobbed.

Maria took Antonio’s hand, placing it over mine. "Rule together... or fall apart."

With one final, heavy sigh, the matriarch of the Russo family closed her eyes for the last time. A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. I stood up slowly, wiped the tears from my face, and took the heavy signet ring from Maria’s thumb, slipping it onto my own pointer finger.

The waitress who once hid in the shadows was gone. The Heir of Brooklyn had finally awakened.
