Chapter 4 - THE CONFRONTATION

I left the study carrying the letter and documents tucked deep inside my bag. My mind raced. I needed to speak to Daniel. Not to accuse him, but to warn him. To tell him what Margaret had done. To help him understand why he had to choose sides.

But when I pulled into the driveway of Olivia’s house—our house—I found Margaret standing on the porch. Waiting.

She saw me step out of the car. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t look ashamed. She looked like a queen whose throne had been threatened.

“Where is it?” she demanded.

I locked the car and stood tall.

“Where is what?”

“The letter. The papers. Whatever your father left you to turn my own son against me.” She stepped down from the porch, eyes narrowing. “He told you, didn’t he? The old fool couldn’t keep his mouth shut even in death.”

So she knew. She had been waiting for this day.

“He told me everything,” I said. “About Daniel. About who he really is. About how you stole him from his mother and lied to everyone for thirty years.”

Margaret went pale. For a heartbeat I saw fear in her eyes—real, raw fear. But it vanished fast, replaced by a cold, hard fury.

“Your father was a liar,” she hissed. “A bitter, jealous man who wanted to take everything from me.”

“Is that why you hate Olivia?” I pressed on. “Because she’s the living proof that your lies can’t last forever? Because she carries the blood of the woman you stole Daniel from?”

Margaret laughed—a sharp, ugly sound.

“You think that’s why I hate her? You think that’s the only secret?” She stepped closer, voice dropping low. “Your father didn’t tell you everything, Emma. He protected you. He protected himself. And he protected the truth about that little girl’s real father.”

The ground seemed to sway beneath me.

“Olivia’s father is Daniel.”

“Is he?” Margaret smiled, thin and cruel. “Ask him. Ask him why he was so silent this morning. Ask him why he never touches her. Why he never holds her. Why he looks at her like she’s a ghost.”

My heart hammered.

“What are you talking about?”

Margaret leaned in, her breath cold against my ear.

“Daniel doesn’t believe Olivia is his daughter. And he has his reasons. Your father knew. He paid hush money. He covered it all up. And then he left everything to her… to buy your silence.”

I stepped back, shaking my head.

“You’re lying. Just like you’ve lied about everything.”

“Am I?” She pulled a folded photograph from her pocket and held it out. “Look at it. Look closely. And then tell me whose eyes she has.”

I hesitated, then took it.

It was an old photograph. A man I had never seen. Standing beside my father. Smiling. And his eyes… they were Olivia’s eyes. The same shape. The same light. The same tilt at the corners.

My blood turned to ice.

“Who is this?” I whispered.

Margaret’s voice dropped to a whisper that felt like a curse.

“That is the man your father never wanted you to know. That is the man who died the year before Olivia was born. That is the reason your father gave her everything. Because she is not Daniel’s daughter, Emma. She is his.”
