Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

That evening, we sat together and talked. For hours. About everything.

Daniel told me what Margaret had said. What she had threatened. How she had manipulated him since he was a child—instilling fear, insecurity, doubt. Always keeping him close, always making him feel like he owed her everything.

“She told me I was nothing without her,” he said. “That no one would ever love me. That I was lucky she took me in.”

“She was breaking you,” I said. “So you would never leave.”

“And it worked. For thirty years. I stayed. I obeyed. I believed her.” He looked at me. “Until you. Until Olivia. Until I realized I was hurting the only people who ever truly loved me.”

I told him about my father. The strange looks. The quiet warnings. The way he had transferred everything to Olivia without explanation.

“He knew Margaret would come for her,” I said. “He left her the power to fight back. But he didn’t tell her why. He didn’t tell me why.”

“Because he was ashamed,” Daniel said. “He carried too much guilt. And too much fear.”

We fell quiet.

Then Daniel said the thing we had both been avoiding.

“What do we do about Olivia?”

I looked at him.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning… do we tell her?” His voice was soft. “About her father. About who she really is. About everything.”

My heart clenched.

“She’s six years old, Daniel. She doesn’t need to know any of this. Not now. Not until she’s old enough to understand.”

“But if we don’t tell her… aren’t we lying too?”

“Protecting her is not lying.” I leaned forward. “My father and Margaret lied to protect themselves. We will keep this secret to protect her. There is a difference.”

Daniel thought for a long time.

“And when she is older?”

“Then we tell her. Everything. On her terms. When she is strong enough to carry it.” I reached for his hand. “She is our daughter. She will always be our daughter. Nothing changes that. Not blood. Not secrets. Not the sins of the past.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Agreed. We protect her. We tell her nothing. And we build her a life where she never has to feel ashamed of anything.”

“Good.” I squeezed his hand. “And Margaret?”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“She is gone for now. But she will come back. She wants what she believes is hers. And she will not stop.”

“Then we will be ready,” I said. “We have the truth. We have the documents. We have each other.”

Daniel looked at me, eyes wet but steady.

“I almost lost you both. Because I believed a lie. I will never let that happen again. Whatever comes… whatever the cost… I stand with you. And I stand with Olivia.”

“Together,” I said.

“Together.”

We had made our choice. We would carry the secrets. We would face the danger. We would protect our daughter. No matter what.

But as I looked out the window into the darkening sky, I felt a cold prickle of dread. Margaret had run. But she hadn’t surrendered. And she knew things. Things we didn’t.

Somewhere out there, she was planning. Waiting. And preparing to strike one last time.
