Chapter 18 - JUSTICE

“Put the gun down!”

My voice rang out as I stepped out of the house. Margaret spun toward me, gun swinging my way. Daniel lunged forward, grabbing her wrist.

The shot went wild. Echoed across the valley.

They struggled. Margaret screamed, thrashing, fighting with the desperation of someone who had nothing left to lose. Daniel twisted her arm. She cried out in pain. The gun clattered onto the gravel.

Daniel kicked it aside. Then he pinned her to the ground, holding her still.

Margaret lay there, gasping, defeated. She looked up at us—first at Daniel, then at me. Her eyes were empty. All the pride, all the arrogance, gone.

“Thirty years,” she whispered. “I built everything. And one by one… you tore it all down.”

“You built it on lies,” Daniel said, his voice steady but broken. “On stolen lives. On blood. It was never yours. And it never will be.”

Sirens wailed in the distance. Growing louder. Margaret closed her eyes.

“You called them?”

“I called them hours ago,” I said. “Before we left. We weren’t coming here alone. We just needed you to talk. To confess.”

Margaret laughed, a hollow, terrible sound.

“You played me.”

“You gave us no choice,” I said. “You tried to kill us. You threatened Olivia. You destroyed lives to keep your secrets.”

Police cars arrived, lights flashing against the grey stone walls. Officers rushed forward. Handcuffs clicked around Margaret’s wrists. She didn’t resist. She let them pull her to her feet.

As they led her away, she looked back once more at Daniel.

“I loved you,” she said. “In my own way… I loved you.”

Daniel said nothing. He just watched her go. Watched the woman who had stolen him, lied to him, and destroyed his real mother… finally face the consequences.

When the police were gone, Daniel walked back to the house. He stood on the porch, shoulders hunched, head bowed. I went to him. Wrapped my arms around him. He leaned into me, trembling.

“She killed her,” he whispered. “My own mother. Margaret killed her. And my father helped.”

“I know,” I said softly. “I know.”

Julian stood in the doorway behind us. He held the letters gently.

“Your mother knew this might happen,” he said quietly. “She wrote these for you. So you would know she loved you. Even when she was gone.”

May you like

Daniel took the letters. Held them against his chest.

“She loved me,” he said, tears spilling over. “That is enough. That is more than Margaret ever gave me.”
