Chapter 16 - THE HIDDEN WITNESS

We left Olivia with Claire, my lawyer, under strict police protection. I kissed her forehead a dozen times before leaving, promising I would return.

“Be careful,” Claire said, her voice tight with worry. “Margaret is dangerous. If she’s watching you…”

“Let her watch,” Daniel said. “This ends tomorrow.”

The drive to Havenwood took three hours. The estate sat deep in the mountains, surrounded by thick forest and high stone walls. The house itself was large, stone, and silent. Windows boarded up. Ivy climbing the walls like grasping hands.

We stepped out of the car. The air felt cold and still.

“My father brought me here once,” I said quietly. “When I was very small. I remember… someone was always watching from an upstairs window. I thought it was my imagination.”

Daniel walked to the front door. It was locked, but the wood was old. He forced it open with his shoulder.

Inside smelled of dust and time. Furniture draped in white sheets. Thick layers of dust covering every surface. Footprints—old, faded—leading toward the stairs.

We followed them up. To the third floor. To a door at the very end of the hall. Heavy iron lock. Fresh scratches around the keyhole.

Daniel broke the lock. The door swung open.

Inside was a room. Clean. Swept. Supplied. Books on the shelves. A bed made. A man sitting by the window, staring out at the trees.

He turned slowly. His face was lined, pale, eyes wide with shock.

“Clara?” he whispered, his voice rough from disuse.

I stepped forward, heart hammering.

“Julian?”

The man stood up, unsteady. He looked at me, then at Daniel. His breath caught.

“You have her eyes,” he said to Daniel. “Clara’s eyes.”

It was him. Julian Voss. Alive. After thirty years.

“My father kept you here,” I said. “He locked you away.”

Julian nodded slowly, sinking back into his chair.

“He paid me. Threatened me. Said if I left… he would kill Clara. Then one day… he came back and told me she was dead. That it was an accident. And that I would rot here if I ever told anyone the truth.”

“What truth?” Daniel asked, his voice trembling.

Julian looked between us.

“Clara didn’t die in an accident. She came to me that night. Terrified. She said she had proof. Proof that Margaret had been stealing from the family. Proof that she had paid to have Clara’s adoption records falsified. She was going to expose them both. Your father… and Margaret. Together.”

He paused, swallowing hard.

“She said your father begged her to wait. Said he would fix it. But she knew… she knew they would kill her to keep it quiet. So she gave me this.”

Julian reached into the drawer beside him and pulled out a small, sealed metal box. He handed it to Daniel.

“Open it. She said if anything happened to her… give this to her son. When he was old enough to understand.”

Daniel’s hands shook as he pried the lid open. Inside were letters. Bank records. Photographs. And a handwritten will, dated the day before Clara died.

Daniel read it aloud, his voice cracking.

*Everything I have, everything I own, every proof I have gathered… I leave to my son, Daniel. And if I do not return… if I die… know this. Margaret and your brother destroyed me. And they will destroy anyone who stands in their way.*

Daniel stopped reading. He looked up at Julian.

“Her brother?” I whispered. “My father.”

Julian nodded, tears streaming down his face.

“Your father was her brother. But he chose Margaret. He chose money. He chose power. And he let her die.”
