Chapter 20 - THE TRUTH WE CHOSE

Months have passed since that day at Havenwood.

We live in a new house now. Smaller. Brighter. Full of laughter. Olivia runs through the halls, singing, chasing the dog we adopted. She is happy. Safe. Loved.

Daniel and I stand in the garden, watching her play. The sun is setting, painting the sky in soft gold and rose.

We have decided what to tell Olivia. And what not to tell.

She will know she is loved. She will know she is precious. She will know that her grandfather on my side made terrible mistakes, that he hurt people, and that we must learn from the sins of the past.

But she will never know that my father was also her father. She will never know the shame or the darkness. She will never know that Margaret tried to destroy her because of a secret she did not choose.

That is our burden. And we will carry it for her.

One day, when she is older, we will give her Clara’s letters. We will tell her about the brave, wonderful woman who gave her son life, and who died trying to protect him. We will tell her about Julian, who waited thirty years to see justice done. We will tell her about the family that loves her more than anything.

And we will tell her that blood does not define us. The people who choose to love us… that is family.

Olivia runs over, breathless, and throws her arms around us both.

“What are you talking about?” she asks, looking up with those bright, beautiful eyes—eyes that belong to so many people, to so many stories.

Daniel smiles down at her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

“We were talking about family,” he says. “And how lucky we are.”

Olivia grins. She looks at me. Then back at him.

“The best family ever?”

I kiss the top of her head, pressing my heart against hers.

“The very best.”

We stand there together, watching the sun disappear below the horizon. The secrets are still there, buried deep. The scars remain. But we have chosen our truth. We have chosen love. We have chosen to heal.

May you like

And as long as we stand together… nothing can ever hurt us again.

THE END
