Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

Three days passed. Margaret did not return. She did not call. She did not write.

But the silence felt heavy. Like holding one’s breath.

Daniel and I moved into a small, safe house on the edge of town. Somewhere Margaret had never visited. We kept Olivia close. We kept our phones off. We kept watch.

In the quiet, Daniel began digging deeper. He had inherited his real mother’s name—Clara Bennett. He began searching for anything more about her. Friends. Letters. People who had known her.

One afternoon he called me into the study. His face was pale.

“Emma… look at this.”

He handed me a photograph. Old. Faded. Clara, standing beside a man. Not my father. Not anyone I recognized.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“I don’t know. But look at the back.”

I turned it over. Handwriting. Clara’s.

*The only man I ever loved. The only one who knows the truth. If anything happens to me… find him.*

A name was scrawled beneath it.

Julian Voss.

I looked up.

“Julian Voss?”

“I found his name in her address book too. Written over and over. Like she was afraid to forget it.” Daniel leaned forward. “And I found something else. A police report. Filed three days before Clara died. By Julian Voss. Claiming she was in danger. That she was being threatened.”

My heart skipped.

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared. The same night Clara died. No body. No note. Nothing.” Daniel’s voice dropped. “And your father handled his disappearance too.”

The room seemed to grow colder.

“Daniel… are you saying…”

“I’m saying there was another secret. One even your father didn’t write down. Clara was going to tell Julian everything. About the adoption. About the money. About the threats. And then… she died. And he vanished.”

“And you think my father had him killed too?”

“I don’t know what to think.” Daniel stood up, pacing. “But Margaret said something before she left. Something about ‘three people who know the truth.’ She said your father was one. She was the second. And the third… was gone.”

“Julian.”

“Julian.” Daniel stopped pacing and looked at me. “If he’s alive… if he’s out there… he knows everything. He can prove what really happened that night. He can prove whether Clara’s death was an accident… or murder.”

“And Margaret knows where he is.”

“Or she knows he’s alive. And she’s terrified he will come back.”

I looked down at the photograph. Clara’s face. Smiling. Happy. Unaware of what was coming.

“Then we find him,” I said quietly. “Before Margaret does.”
