Chapter 17 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION

The truth hit us like a physical blow. My own father had chosen Margaret over his sister. He had helped her hide the adoption. He had helped her silence Clara. And then he had kept Julian locked away for thirty years to ensure the truth never came out.

Everything he had left to Olivia… the house, the money, the trust… it wasn’t protection. It was blood money. Payment for silence. Payment for Clara’s life.

And Margaret… she had known Julian was alive all along. She had threatened him. She had kept him hidden. And when we started digging… she had tried to kill us to keep it all buried.

“We have everything,” Daniel said, clutching the letters. “Proof of the conspiracy. Proof of the threats. Proof that Clara’s death was no accident.”

“And Margaret knows we’re here,” I said. “She knows we found him.”

As if on cue, a car engine roared outside. We rushed to the window. A black sedan skidded to a halt on the gravel.

Margaret stepped out. Alone. But she carried something in her hand. A gun.

“She’s here,” Daniel said, his voice deadly calm. “Julian, stay inside. Lock the door. No matter what happens, do not come out.”

“Daniel—” I began.

“Stay with him.” He gripped my shoulders, looking deep into my eyes. “Protect him. Protect the truth. I will handle her.”

Before I could argue, he was gone.

I watched from the window as Daniel walked out to meet her. Margaret stood by the car, gun raised.

“Stop right there!” she shouted.

Daniel stopped ten paces away. Hands raised.

“It’s over, Margaret. Julian is alive. We have Clara’s letters. We have the proof. Everything.”

Margaret’s face twisted into a mask of rage and fear.

“Your father promised me it would stay buried! He promised no one would ever know!”

“He’s dead, Margaret! And you are still paying for his sins!” Daniel took a step forward. “Why? Why did you do it? You had everything. Money. Status. A son you claimed to love.”

“I had nothing!” she screamed. “Until I took it! I was born into nothing! I made myself a Sterling! And she… Clara… she tried to take it all away! She tried to take you away from me!”

“I was never yours to take!” Daniel’s voice cracked like a whip. “You stole me! You lied to me! And then you let her die!”

Margaret’s hand trembled on the gun.

“Go back,” she said, her voice shaking. “Burn everything. Forget what you found. Leave. And I will let you live.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Then I will kill you. Just like I killed her.”

The words hung in the cold mountain air. A confession. Finally.

Margaret’s finger tightened on the trigger.
